ABOUT US


The British Centre is a department of the University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice. It is the only one centre of its kind in the South of Bohemia. The Centre has got a large library (17 thousand of books and additional materials in English). From 1992 to 2001 the British Centre was one of the regional centres of the British Council and was supported by Great Britain.
The main activities of the British Centre are: library services, English seminars, English clubs and lectures with native speakers, exhibitions language courses and Cambridge Examinations.

This important cultural and educational centre focuses on deepening the language literacy within various age groups of population and puts stress on English language and Great Britain.

The British Centre is the only regional organiser of internationally recognised Cambridge Examinations with lifelong validity. Since 2004 the British Centre has organised its own intensive language courses.

The British Centre is supported by the University of South Bohemia, the Town of České Budějovice and the British Council in Prague.

At present there are 1112 registered members of the British Centre.
The lectures and clubs are visited by 40-50 people which means a full capacity of the Centre.
The library lends annually about 92 thousand items of its materials.
11581 candidates took the international Cambridge exams in the last nineteen years.
The British Centre gave 593 seminars and lectures, 40 exhibitions, 19 readings with British authors (together with the British Council) and hosted 925 excursions.
It is possible to see a programme of interesting seminars and lectures in "Topical Information" as well as "Photogallery" on our website. This website has been visited by more than 250.000 people.
The British Centre runs 13 language courses focused on preparing the candidates for the international Cambridge exams.
Every year the staff answer more than 10 000 questions.
Quick Placement Test (assessing candidate`s level of English) has been offered to 13941 people.
